The residents of Tekamah will have the opportunity to apply local control to a new 1/2 cent sales tax for economic development purposes, referred to as LB 840. The Tekamah Economic Development Program explains the plan, that allows the city to use the additional funds for qualifies economic development activities.
Residents will need to vote yes TWICE on the ballot issue – for the sales tax and for the plan – in order for it to pass. LB 840 is on of the very few ways a community can help itself. With the decline of state and federal resources, over 65 communities across Nebraska have voted to help themselves with LB840. Assisting new or expanding businesses, addressing the need for additional workforce housing and downtown beautification were the top three concerns in the recent Tekamah Strategic Plan. LB 840 is a tool that can work on these issues.
Please feel free to contact the Burt County Economic Development Corporation for more information or if you have any questions regarding the plan. And don’t forget to vote Yes and Yes for Economic Development in May.
